“CA – Anthology of images” will constitute of three “mosaic” photo-films (each composed of photo works by different artists). Prevailing idea of all three films is “game”. This concept gains new shades passing from one film to another. The first film illustrates the “game” as a play, show, performance, the second as a role play (or “strategy”), the third one as a game for ourselves (“our games”).

CONCEPTS

The selection procedure is finished. 

Photo artists were welcome to visualize these three concepts.

1. “Attraction” (key words: attraction, show, and latest events, spectacular, showy).
Exhibition “STILLS-Attraction: To be seen”: October 1-3, 2009, Almaty, Tengri-Umai Gallery.

2. “Locality” (exotics, periphery, context, extremes, Orientalism). 
Exhibition “STILLS-Locality: to be recognized”: December 7-12, 2009, Bactria Cultural Centre. 

3. “Enthusiasm” (unselfishness, pathos, sincerity, “home art”).
Exhibition “STILLS-Enthusiasm: To be or not to be?”: April 14-27, 2010, Bishkek, Koldo-Art Gallery. 

GUIDELINES

All the participating artists are the owners of all copy rights for the works provided and agree with the contest terms which include possible non-commercial display of the works.

EXHIBITIONS

Each of the films was displayed as a video installation at separate exhibitions.

“STILLS-Attraction: to be seen” - in Almaty which is believed to be a CA megalopolis. 

In usual, CA art is open to somebody’s view, easily comprehended, spectator-friendly, both locally and internationally. As a rule it offers some simple approach as an easily read symbol. If it is not something catchy it is something obvious.  This creates an impression of an amusement part or rather a show, an attraction of scenic images and mise-en-scènes.    

“STILLS-Locality: To be recognized” - in Dushanbe where an oriental reputation and nostalgic soviet environment are combined.

Here a representative mission of our art is illustrated, predetermined by itself: remaking of Asian mythic motifs or documentation of problems, odd things of the eastern part of former “Second World” (it is a part of Orientalism discourse in its “self-orientalistic” edition).   

“STILLS-Enthusiasm: To be or not to be?” - in Bishkek which is well-known as a centre of unselfish creativity.  

Art situation in the region rests mainly on post-soviet enthusiasm of artists, on ever rising hope to build something lead by an adventures and playing interest.  Central Asian contemporary art can hardly be a profession or trade, it seems to be voluntarily and nonobligatory (artists periodically come off the art scene and come back making it a enthralling magnet game).
Every game has an end and is limited in time. That is why every now and then eschatological moods are actualized in Central Asian art world. Dreams of sustainable and steady art process are stills nothing but dreams. We leave under a sign of new enthusiastic initiatives which emerge and disappear and emerge again.
